what freeware program will record from a sound card?

I want to record part of an interview I can get from www.npr.org, and turn it into an .mp3 file. It plays fine on Windows Media Player, but I don’t have anything to save that file or turn it into an mp3.

    Audacity is the best free audio recorder and editor.

    You can record under the “what you hear” option and anything that plays thru your speakers is recorded.

    As previously answered, Audacity is the best freeware audio recording program. You can learn more about it and download from its home page here:

    In order to create mp3 files with Audacity, you will need to install the the LAME MP3 Encoder Library with Audacity. Instructions are available on thse 2 web pages:
