Legal MP3s are compatible and there’s no need for any message. You must have already downloaded a big fat virus.

Question is not very well written. It sounds like you are either asking how songs already downloaded to your PC can be transferred to your iPod.

It could also be tajken to ask how to get songs off the internet (for the purpose of putting on your iPod).

“for some songs when I download I don’t get the song but instead get the this mp3 download is illegal message”

It would help if you specified, step by step, just how you were trying to get music in the first place – there are so many ways, even when it comes to downloading from the internet. From what you’ve described, you’ve either gone to a website or used a peer-share app to connect from a network (eg Limewire). each method has its share of hazards.

Your best bet is to borrow CD’s from friends and use WMP to “rip” the songs from your CD – this will create MP3 copies on your HD. Another safe way is to get a program called audacity – you will be able to record music streaming from the internet through your soundcard I use this to record streaming audio from internet radio stations. You can do this to record music from sites like Youtube or LastFM, and save them to MP3 format, which can then be tagged like any other mp32 file.

You can download from internet sites like beemp3 – but I’ve done this rarely, so I can’t verify how safe or reliable other sites are.

You can download using peer-share programs like Limewire. However, Limewire itself is to be avoided at all costs. Besides the fact that its user base has been overtaken by n00bs and leeches who don’t share their own stuff, the software itself has some serious cyber security issues. The only people who actually rely on LW are willfully blind morons who don’t mind having to replace their “old” computer (yeah – 6 weeks worth of obsolesence – time for a quad core machine).

Better peer-share apps (if that’s what you want to do) are winmx & eMule, but make sure you look for a reputable site to get them.

Once you have the music file, get iTunes. Many people seem to think that Apple has sinister reasons for requiring you to use iTunes. The iPod is not the seamless user experience Apple Fanboys would have us believe, but Itunes is a remarkably enjoyable program, making it easy to prganize your library, customize files, create playlists and transfer to your iPod. There is really no valid reason to forego iTunes.

Once you’ve got iTunes, you’ve got to import the music files from your HD. Find the mp3 file you want to import, then the file from its folder on your HD (probably “my music” or “music”) and drop into the iTunes main window. Then drag from there onto the music icon right below the iPod icon on the left side of the screen.
